Interesting Ladies: The Dahomey Amazons

In what is now the Republic of Benin in West Africa (formerly Dahomey) there used to be an all-female military regiment; brave women called Mino (“Our mothers”). These women warriors were recruited among the Ahosi (“King’s wives”) and are also known as the Dahomey Amazons. Trained to be disciplined fighting machines, these women had strength and stamina. Knives, clubs, teeth and later rifles were part of their arsenal. If you were unlucky and captured, you were likely to lose your head. The last surviving Amazon of Dahomey died in 1979.

Interesting little fact: In the end, nearly all of these amazing amazons were killed in action against the French in the 1890s. Most of the surviving women went to America and joined Buffalo Bill‘s Wild West Show.
