These Neoclassical beauties stand intimately and in perfect harmony, sharing an eternal private moment. Captured by their creator the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, these three charistes (daughters of Zeus in Greek mythology) represent Joy, Charm and Beauty.
There are two versions of Canova’s The Three Graces. Originally created for Empress Josephine (the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte), the 6th Duke of Bedford offered to buy the work from the artist upon hearing of her death in 1814. Unsuccessful in his attempt to acquire the piece he commissioned another version of the work. Both works are done in white marble, but there are some differences. The one below can be seen at The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
