Wild Fairy Birds

From a very early age researcher Melanie Barboni had a wish: “My dearest dream as a child was to see hummingbirds”. Barboni knows a lot about geology and volcanoes, but it’s the hummingbirds that makes her heart beat faster. Outside her office window at UCLA, she has cultivated a “fairy” bird colony. This has earned her the nickname: The Hummingbird Whisperer. About 200 birds visit every day to feed off a mixture of water and sugar that she puts in feeders hanging from trees around her office.
